Sickle Cell Disease-ENCORE

Sickle cell disease was first written about in the U.S. 100 years ago in the medical journal Archives of Internal Medicine. Despite the knowledge of its existence, many are still unaware of the impact of this disease and the tough reality those with it face. According to the National Institutes of Health, in the U.S. the disease is prevalent in approximately 1 in 5,000, mostly Americans of Sub-Saharan African descent. Also, about 1 in 500 blacks and up to 1 in 14 hundred Latino births in the U.S. have sickle-cell anemia. Tonight on Voices of Diversity, a look at sickle cell disease and how living with sickle cell does not have to change the way you live your life.

Bell Hooks is a well known race and gender theorist. In her 1996 book on film Reel to Real Race, Sex and Class at the Movies, she wrote that, Most of us go to the movies to enter a world that is different from one we know and are most comfortable with. And even though most folks will say that they go to movies to be entertained, if the truth be told lots of us, myself included, go to movies to learn stuff. Today on Voices of Diversity we discuss the kind of stuff that we can learn from not just any filmmaker, but local filmmakers of color.
By those who disagree with them, Socialists and Tea Partiers are vilivied as extremists, determined to drag down our democracy. While Democrats and Republicans churn out legislation in our govenment, what are these outside groups doing to exert influence on our system? Today on Voices of Diversity we have a Socialist and a Tea Partier. What do they propose to address problems such as healthcare and financial reform and govenment regulation?
You are what you eat. You have probably heard this statement over and over again. However, how often have you stopped to really think about its meaning? One obvious meaning is that our bodies are composed of all the nutrients and building blocks in that food. But there is more. Our food choices and relationship to how we eat also says a whole lot about the cultures we are from and the values we hold. Pumpkin pie or sweet potato pie? Potatoes instead pasta? Spicy versus bland? How is what we eat reflective of who we are and the different cultures we come from? And how is your life based on how you eat? Over a 40-year career, they will earn up to 100,000 dollars less before taxes than their thinner counterparts. Mistreatment in the workplace is only one way significantly overweight people suffer in society. Negative media images, teasing and harassment and just plain old not fitting into the world are all part of daily life for large people. Today on Voices of Diversity, we will look at the topic of size discrimination: what is it, why does it exist and what are some possible responses to it?

Transportation Issues

Access to public transportation is one of the ways cities are evaluated in terms of livability. Every year reports come out ranking factors like per capita spending on public transportation, number of safety incidents and number of trips taken. These statistics leave out one thing: community impact. Today on Voices of Diversity, transportation advocates, officials and riders discuss why how you get there is sometimes as important as where you are going.

Consider this question: what is our prison system for punishment or rehabilitation? Retribution or justice? Recently, prisoner treatment and needs gained national attention with a three week hunger strike that began at Californias Pelican Bay State prison near the Oregon border. The strike is over but debate continues over how incarcerated individuals are treated. Today on Voices of Diversity, we talk to local prison advocates, officials and both current and former inmates about what is going on in the prison system behind the scenes, and where there may be hope for a better future.

Sports and Community

Professional tennis player, Billie Jean King once said, Sports is a microcosm of society. Perhaps this statement says it all. Recently 13 point 5 million people in the U.S. watched the Womens World Cup Final as Japan beat the U.S. to win the cup for the first time. Why did millions of people gather around television sets in homes, bars and arenas to witness this historic soccer event? The reasons vary but at the heart of it all is a shared passion- the love of sports! Whether you play the game or cheer on the players, everyone can get involved. Today on Voices of Diversity, how can sports build community? We discuss the role of recreational activities in diverse communities.

Diversity Training

Diversity management is a term that became popular in the 1980s. Now in 2011 the term is diversity training. No matter what the term, the goal of training remains the same; to increase the cultural awareness, knowledge and skills of the participants, usually in the context of a workplace. How people feel about diversity training ranges from resentful to grateful. Today on Voices of Diversity, we talk to local diversity training professionals about their professions. How has the world of diversity training evolved? And where do we go next?

We are living in a world today where finding an audience online is never a problem. You can share your thoughts on any topic and make it easy for people to find them, read them and pass them along to others. This is the world of social media. Facebook and Twitter are dominant forces but there are literally thousands of websites involved in this new medium. Today on Voices of Diversity, we will explore some of the pros and cons of this new reality. One of our guests played a large role right here in Seattle in sparking the debate; Is there a problem with people saying anything they want publicly? And are we prepared to deal with the consequences of that freedom?

In fact, tempers are rising as some Native Americans feel targeted and culturally disrespected. In our studio to discuss the issues, we have a panel representing a range of voices across the lefty landscape.

Breast Cancer and Racial Disparities

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. All women are at risk for getting breast cancer. However, among African American women it is the most common form of cancer. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death in this racial group. Another interesting statistic: breast cancer incidence is lower in African American women, yet they have a 38 percent higher breast cancer death rate than Caucasian women. What's going on here? Today on Voices of Diversity, we discuss racial disparities in breast cancer mortality and what women of all races should know about the disease.

Commemorating the life and legacy of El Centro de la Raza founder Roberto Maestas

Recently, Seattle lost a local hero. Social Activist and El Cento De La Raza Founder, Roberto Maestas passed away three weeks ago because of complications from cancer. Roberto formed El Centro de la Raza after a 1972 "camp in" at Beacon Hill Elementary School. He occupied the building when financial support for an English as a Second Language program he founded stopped at South Seattle Community College. The occupation lasted for three months and the empty school became Latino community center El Centro de la Raza. Tonight, we take a look back at the life and legacy of Roberto Maestas with the people who knew him the best.

Mental Health in the API Community

Last week, Cambodian American elder Saroeun Phan shot and murdered 4 of her own family and took her own life. According to her family, she suffered from a long history of mental illness. For some, the shooting is especially shocking because it happened in the Asian Pacific Island community. However, mental health issues affect all communities, though are often overlooked and kept secret in API communities both here and abroad. So, on today's Voices of Diversity, we explore this issue of mental health in API communities. What are the cultural and policy obstacles that one might encounter when trying to access mental health care? And how can we all be accountable in encouraging our friends and family to seek out mental health care services?

Food Diversity

You are what you eat. You have probably heard this statement over and over again. However, how often have you stopped to really think about its meaning? One obvious meaning is that our bodies are composed of all the nutrients and building blocks in that food. But there's more. Tonight on Voices of Diversity we dish about the relationship between food and our cultures with chefs, restaurant owners and local food advocates.

Entering Year 4 of Economic Crisis: A Northwest Status Report

The recession has caused hardships for many people: from losing jobs to losing homes, health insurance and many more benefits that come with being employed. The state unemployment rate is at 9.5%. That's approximately 335,000 unemployed or underemployed people here in the Northwest. As we enter our fourth year of this current economic crisis, we'll check in on how the recession has impacted families and our communities. Tonight on Voices of Diversity, we discuss the current economic crisis, unemployment and the hard times many families and communities are facing.

Haiti

Today a 6.1 aftershock rocks Haiti and causes a scare in an already panicked country. An estimated 200 thousand are dead in Haiti, about 250 thousand are injured, and 1.5 million are homeless after last week's devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake. Aid can't get to Haiti soon enough while many in the country can't get out fast enough. Tonight on Voices of Diversity, what local Haitians are doing to help their home land, how Northwest organizations are stepping up and what you can do to help.

Financial Access to Higher Learning

According to a report released today from D.C.-based education policy organization The Education Trust, the nation's top public universities are spending less time accepting low-income and minority students and more time courting the wealthy. It seems, in a world where minority students attend college proportionally less than white Americans, the chances of those without financial resources going to college just got slimmer. Tonight on Voices of Diversity, we examine the financial difficulties in accessing higher learning.

The Culture of No Snitching

Maurice Clemmons, the man who gunned down four police officers in Lakewood in November at a coffee shop, evaded police with the help of family and friends. One of three people stabbed in downtown Seattle last month refused to talk to police. A Roosevelt High School student is harassed and shot at by gang members for "snitching" and doesn't report the crime to the police because he feared for the life of him and his family. Tonight on Voices of Diversity, to snitch or not to snitch...that is the question. But the bigger question is why does a "no snitch" culture still exist? Criminals continue to roam the streets and claim more victims, a fact completely avoidable if the right people start talking to the authorities.
